Quentin Tarantino’s Mom Had A Hard Time With His Writing
In the podcast, Quentin Tarantino said he first started writing screenplays in grade school, and once said he wrote a script at age 12. He also said he struggled in school and often got into trouble with his teachers.
“My mom always had a hard time about my scholastic non-ability,” the director said.
In one ranting, she further drove home her distaste for his writing work.
“She said, ‘Oh, and by the way, this little ‘writing career,’ with the finger quotes and everything. This little ‘writing career’ that you’re doing? That s–t is over!’”
Quentin Tarantino decided at that moment that he’d never give any money to her if he became successful. Koppelman asked the director if he stuck to that promise.
“Yeah, yeah,” Tarantino said. “I helped her out with a jam with the IRS. But no house. No Cadillac, no house.”
Quentin Tarantino’s Mom Had A Hard Time With His Writing
The director said his mother is still alive, but he keeps his financial vow going.
“There are consequences for your words as you deal with your children,” Quentin Tarantino said in the podcast. “Remember there are consequences for your sarcastic tone about what’s meaningful to them.”
Tarantino has one son.
News sources have documented his strained mother relationship over the years. His mother, Connie, was reportedly 16 when she gave birth to Quentin in Tennessee. The family moved to Los Angeles when Tarantino was 4.
The New Yorker wrote in 2003 of the director’s childhood that one biography, “correct[ed] the Agee-Esque legend that had grown up around Quentin Tarantino since the release of ‘Reservoir Dogs’: that he was a dirt-poor illiterate hillbilly from Tennessee, brought up by a teen-age dropout.”
In the story, Tarantino’s mother seemed to want to gloss over her son’s memories of childhood, saying, “he would have you believe he was raised by wolves.”
But the New Yorker reported of Connie’s complex life, too. In it, she was born in Tennessee, birthed Quentin at 16, and got married. She emancipated herself to go to college. She was mad that her husband got her pregnant after telling her he was sterile. That was enough for the subsequent divorce. After that, she didn’t introduce Tony Tarantino to her son until after he was a few years old.
